Hoops & Leaders Basketball Camp is run through a collaborative partnership with the NYC Parks Department and Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. The NY Parks departments not only provides the facilities for our camp, but staff and support and campers for the program. Big Brothers, Big Sisters not only provides staff, volunteers and youth participants but technical assistance in making successful mentoring matches. HLBC Directors
Aaron Dworkin, Founder and Executive Director :
Aaron created The Hoops & Leaders Basketball Camp in 2001 due to his experience with and passion for youth leadership training, mentoring and basketball. Aaron has developed and taught the HLBC curriculum, raised all funds, recruited speakers, mentors, volunteers and created partnerships with the NYC Parks Department and Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. Currently, he serves as a mentor to an HLBC camper and works full-time as a financial analyst at Moody’s Investors Service. Previously, Aaron worked for the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development on after-school program policy. He also served as Director of Strategic Development for the non-profit Coro New York Leadership Center where he worked closely with the Board of Directors and was responsible for marketing, fundraising and creating new programs. He is a graduate of Tufts University, a former Coro Fellow in Public Affairs and holds a Masters in Education from Harvard University and a Masters in Public Administration from Columbia University. Recently, Aaron helped coordinate a national, Harvard-sponsored conference on the emerging field of sports-based youth development.
Justin Weir, Program Director :
Justin has served as co-director of The Hoops & Leaders Basketball Camp since 2003. Justin came to HLBC as a volunteer mentor in the camp in 2002 because of his passions for basketball, youth coaching and mentoring. At the end of the camp, he served as a mentor and coach to one of the campers he met at HLBC. He became a camp co-director in 2003 and in his current role helps to recruit mentors, lead basketball practices and leadership activities. Full time, he serves as Dean of middle school students for Prep for Prep, a non-profit academic and youth leadership training program that prepares minority students for admission and academic success at private high schools and colleges. Justin attended Wesleyan University and has worked towards an MBA in Sports Business Management from the University of Central Florida.
